instabilities of thin viscous liquid film flowing down a uniformly heated inclined plane

چکیده
instabilities of a thin viscous film flowing down a uniformly heated plane are investigated in this study. the heating generates a surface tension gradient that induces thermocapillary stresses on the free surface. thus, the film is not only influenced by gravity and mean surface tension but also the thermocapillary force is acting on the free surface. moreover, the heat transfer at the free surface plays a crucial role in the evolution of the film. the main objective of this study is to scrutinize the impact of biot number bi which describes heat transfer at the free surface on instability mechanism. using the long wave expansion method, a generalized non-linear evolution equation of benney type, including the above mentioned effects, is derived for the development of the free surface. a normal mode approach and the method of multiple scales are used to obtain the linear and weakly nonlinear stability solution for the film flow. the linear stability analysis of the evolution equation shows that the biot number plays a double role; for bi < 1 it gives destabilizing effect but for bi > 1 it produces stabilization. at bi = 1, the instability is maximum. the weakly nonlinear study reveals that the impact of marangoni number mr is very strong on the bifurcation scenario even for its slight variation. this behaviour of the biot number is the consequence of the fact that the interfacialtemperature is held close to the plane temperature for bi > 1, thus weakening the marangoni effect. the weakly nonlinearstudy reveals that the impact of marangoni number mr is very strong on the bifurcation scenario even for its slight variation.

متن کاملLinear temporal and spatio-temporal stability analysis of a binary liquid film flowing down an inclined uniformly heated plate
Temporal and spatio-temporal instabilities of binary liquid films flowing down an inclined uniformly heated plate with Soret effect are investigated by using the Chebyshev collocation method to solve the full system of linear stability equations. Seven dimensionless parameters, i.e. the Kapitza, Galileo, Prandtl, Lewis, Soret, Marangoni, and Biot numbers (Ka, G, Pr, L, χ , M , B), as well as th...
متن کاملAbsolute and convective instabilities of a viscous film flowing down a vertical fiber.
The stability of a viscous film flowing down a vertical fiber under the action of gravity is analyzed both experimentally and theoretically. At large or small film thicknesses, the instability is convective, whereas an absolute instability mode is observed in an intermediate range of film thicknesses for fibers of small enough radius. The onset of the experimental irregular wavy regime correspo...
متن کاملDoubly excited pulse waves on thin liquid films flowing down an inclined plane: An experimental and numerical study.
The interaction patterns between doubly excited pulse waves on thin liquid films flowing down an inclined plane are studied both experimentally and numerically. The effect of varying the film flow rate, interpulse interval, and substrate inclination angle on the pulse interaction patterns is examined. Our results show that different interaction patterns exist for these binary pulses, which incl...
متن کاملLiquid Drops sliding down an inclined plane
We investigate a one-dimensional model describing the motion of liquid drops sliding down an inclined plane (the so-called quasi-static approximation model). We prove existence and uniqueness of a solution and investigate its long time behavior for both homogeneous and inhomogeneous medium (i.e. constant and non-constant contact angle). We also obtain some homogenization results.
متن کاملFilm flow of a suspension down an inclined plane.
A method is developed for simulating the film flow of a suspension of rigid particles with arbitrary shapes down an inclined plane in the limit of vanishing Reynolds number. The problem is formulated in terms of a system of integral equations of the first and second kind for the free-surface velocity and the traction distribution along the particle surfaces involving the a priori unknown partic...
